2012 Exhibition and Opening Ceremony – a reflection
2012 Exhibition and Opening Ceremony on PhotoPeach
Hi 6A,
I am so proud of each and every one of you. I hope you are proud of yourself for all that you achieved whilst prepariong for your Exhibition. You learned so much while on your individual exhibition journey. You learned through collaborating with your peers, teachers and other adults. You also learned through the creative expression sessions, visiting venues and interviewing people, observing others, listening to guests speakers, research, reflection and taking action.
I want you to think about your learning and the impact it has had on you as a learner. Explain
you feel
as a result of your learning over this term…

Hi Ms J,
I think this whole process was a really good experience. I learnt a lot. I had a really good understanding of my inquiry. I could see a very good improvement in my speaking through this process of my inquiry. In my creative expression group I learnt you can express your fellings in anyway like art for example ….. Graffiti you can just write anything in graffiti writing so E.G HURT, SILLY, STUPID…………………………. I also learnt in art you can show your feelings in art in any type of art so like painting you can do shapes that are not even a shape and that can show your feelings in anyway so like the colours. A PICTURE CAN SAY 10000000 WORDS. In this unit of inquiry I didn’t really copy and paste a lot I re wrote a lot of things and wrote more than I thought I couldn’t do. I also found other ways without using the internet for data here are a few things I found data from.
• Books
• Surveying people
• Going to a community centre
• Asking a friend
• Internet
• Dictionary
• Movies
……………………………..
I really learnt a lot throughout this process. I loved it and I hope I can do something like this in my schooling years again.

I hope you get a chance to do something like this again too… if you don’t, demand it!

Hi Ms J,
Here is a list of ways I feel I have been impacted on throughout this inequity and all the things I can do now and the result of my learning.
* speaking to others about my learning.
* explaining my learning to others.
* I have a deeper understanding of my inequity.
* I have found other ways to research other than the internet.
* I have learnt how to express myself through poetry which was my creative expression session group.
* I am more thoughtful and aware whilst around disabled people.
* I didn’t just gather my information I rather tried to understand it more.

There are four things you said that I love:
* speaking to others about my learning.
* explaining my learning to others.
* I am more thoughtful and aware whilst around disabled people.
* I didn’t just gather my information I rather tried to understand it more.
These things show that you are more of an independent learner and also that your learning is changing who you are. THAT IS POWERFUL!
September 19th, 2012 at 2:31 pm
From the exhibition I have learnt that as a learner there is more ways of researching then just using the internet. Reading books or speaking to people who are knowledgeable on the subject gives just as much if not more information than the internet.
I have also learnt that when it comes to expression yourself there is many ways and the more ways you do the better you understand the subject, your learning and yourself as a learner.
Another thing that I have learnt is that if you just research stuff you do not take away as much as if you actually understand what you have researched because there is a difference between knowing and understanding.
As a learner one of the most important things I have learnt is to check information because some websites/books information may be out dated, incorrect or biased and those things could all lead to a bad presentation with people taking away incorrect facts or biased opinions.
September 19th, 2012 at 6:36 pm
Wow! There are many adults that don’t know “there is a difference between knowing and understanding”… but you do. Outstanding!
September 19th, 2012 at 2:34 pm
Hi Ms J,
From preparing for my exhibition as a learner I have learned…
•To speak more about my learning instead of just putting something on paper and making people read it.
•To answer questions that I didn’t research by using prior knowledge and seeing if it connects to any questions that I did research.
•To not only use the internet because a survey can work out better since you know the information is real.
•More about inequities and how they can all connect to each other.
•To express my felling through different forms of presentation like animation.
•To try and make people aware about how serious inequities are and how they shouldn’t be taken lightly.
• That the more I understand made it easier to talk about my topic with other people.
•That some of the questions I inquired into weren’t asked when I was doing my exhibition and I had to see how the questions connected to each other to answer them.

I love the first thing you said. Being able to speak knowledgeably and passionately about your learning can be so much more powerful than standing there while people read your work.
September 19th, 2012 at 2:36 pm
During the exhibition i have learned
. To share my learning with others.
. Not to just get research from the internet but to talk to people about it and see their perspective on the topic.
.Express my thoughts and feelings through graffiti art.
. Understanding your information is different to gathering your information.
.a picture with no words still means more than 1000 words.
The main thing I have learned is to always be VERY grateful for what I have and to never say “I NEED THIS” always say “ I WANT THIS.”

When young people (or actually, people of any age!) learn the difference between “need” and “want” it shows that they are becoming much more aware of the world, much wiser and much more capable of living in a way that is responsible and respectful. Well done. Some people never learn that lesson, but you did.
September 19th, 2012 at 2:36 pm
-One picture can stop a future war
-It’s not about how long a movie is it’s about how powerful and how good it is that is what matters
-It’s easy to talk to people about your research
-Someone talking about their experience is more powerful than someone writing it
-One thing can change a kid for life
-How much impact your parents have on your decisions
September 19th, 2012 at 6:45 pm
Yes! It is easy to talk to people about your research if you’re genuinely interested in it, which you obviously were!

My reflection on the exhibition
I learned to explain my thinking to other people. In music I learned how to write a song and how gathering information is different to understanding information. Know I am more thoughtful of homelessness and I have a better understanding by being a learner. I realised a small video can show a lot. Now I can take action even if I am just a kid and I can find information from other people in the world. I never thought I could wrap or put together a great movie but at the end I found out I can do both of them and the movie was really good and influential. I never knew I had the confidence to speak to anyone well without needing someone else with me .I thought music was a great way of expressing my learning and I will use it again. I liked the exhibition because I got a lot out of it and I realised how many people need help and are living on the street. If I need to take action I know how from the exhibition.

I would love to see your movie… how can I access it?
September 19th, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Hey Ms J,
I feel now that the exhibition is over that I have a deeper understanding of my inequity and I am sure that I will raise awareness in some sort of way and show everyone that many things are possible for children and adults that have disabilities. (I have a very good idea of raising awareness.) I didn’t want to find information on any websites I wanted to be social and sit face to face with a person that had a disability. The creative expression sessions were really fun and taught me a lot. If I got the chance to do the creative expression sessions again I would. I think that I was a very big risk taker in the topic that I had chosen to do for the exhibition. I chose to do ‘disabilities’ ( as you all know) I thought that I was a risk taker because before we had to choose the topic had a big think if I wanted to do disabilities or not because I actually “believe it or not I had a fear of them’. Why- Because I wasn’t the same as them and I wasn’t used to being around people like that, I have actually gotten over my fear now because this man at the ‘access centre’ where we went to, started touching me on my hips and I understand now why he did that because the disability that he had ‘down syndrome’ they are very friendly people and don’t understand your personal space. For the exhibition presentation tool I chose to a poster, in the poster I included a variety of pictures and a big picture that I drew. In that picture I included a phrase and it said “Give us a voice, let us be heard.” In that phrase I was trying to say that we are all the same and we need to be heard so people understand that people with disabilities are not different they just have different needs. In our creative expression sessions I also learned to express your emotions through drawings and paintings. I really want to continue inquiring into disabilities even know the exhibition is over. My aunty works in the Jewish News and I want to put an article with a picture with me and the adults that had disabilities and write an article about what I did and my journey that I had. I wish I could do the exhibition again.

Gabsy, you can “do the exhibition” any time. You can be in control of your own learning any time. You can take action on things you care about any time. The point of the exhibition is just to help you realise that.

Hey Ms Joubert
I feel now, after the exhibition…
• That I have learnt how much of a difference there is between understanding the topic and just gathering facts. I feel that me and my inequity are connected strongly now after I have learnt so much from it. Another part of this is that what I should be looking for isn’t facts it’s actually many little facts put together to help me understand what I set out to find out at the start of this inequity.
• That I have learnt how to speak about my topic and not in a question answer way, I learnt how to speak about the topic in a genuine conversation, this helped me explain my thinking and helped me understand and remember my topic that much more and I’ll definitely use this skill in future projects.
• That I can use so many ways to present and express my thoughts on the topic for example through music or on a poster or using the computer etc. but what I really found interesting was how much of a wide range of ways to do this. I used this to my strengths and expressed myself through things that I love to do.
• That when doing one thing it can lead to another for example my big goal was to spread awareness about homelessness, and along the way I learnt so many things including song writing and a whole lot of useful skills that I can use in the future.
• I learnt that a poster isn’t meant to have a lot of words it should just be eye catching an catchy but it has to be enough to get your message across and if you do that well then it is easier to present your poster.
Thanks guys. Jack

Hey Ms J
Through this process I have learnt..
Speaking to others about my learning, explaining my thinking. Other ways to research not just the web. I surveyed people to find my information. I have learnt what stereotyping is and why is it sometimes bad. I have learnt how to express my feelings through dram and the different ways to do it. I learnt that I don’t need someone to be next to me while I do my research. I learnt that there are so many types of stereotypes. I am more aware of stereotyping and when someone says a stereotype I have told them to stop. I learnt that even though not many people were doing the same inequity as me I still connected to bullying and discrimination.

You said “I learnt that I don’t need someone to be next to me while I do my research”. That tells me (and your teachers) that you’re becoming an independent learner.
September 19th, 2012 at 2:38 pm
Hi Ms J,
• I can speak to others about my learning.
• I can explain my thinking.
• I can express my thoughts through graffiti art.
• A picture is worth 1000 words, a picture can be very powerful.
• I took action by posting a video on the blog, and surveyed people.
• I feel I have improved with my creativity a lot.
• I have improved on co-operating.
• I have improved on asking questions.
• I have improved on taking notes on important information.

Exhibition Reflection
Over this term I have learned so much. There have been so many great things and I have changed in so many ways because of all the amazing opportunities there have been. One of many new thoughts I have is that understanding is different to gathering facts. What I mean by that is you could have 100 pages on animal cruelty that you found on the internet on a foreign website knowing nothing about what it said, some people might count that as understanding but… it really not it is actually the complete opposite you don’t know a thing. However when you understand you can talk about what you know comfortably and you know what you are talking about. You are sure you know clearly what were how why and who all about your topic. I felt like I understood my inequity the whole time. In creative expression groups (art) I have learnt how to express myself through pavement art, graffiti, stencils and much more. Now I know lots about animal cruelty.

“when you understand you can talk about what you know comfortably and you know what you are talking about”
I love the word “comfortably”… it is so true, when you understand you can be comfortable because you really do know what you’re talking about. Great quote. I tweeted it!

Hi Ms J,
thank you, I feel so loved when someone feels proud of me. As you know, I love public speaking, it’s my hobby. But can I be honest, when you have to say the same thing over and over and over again. I can say it gets kinda irritating, but the exhibition has shown me, that even though I am saying the same thing 500 times, its different every time because it is so different when you are talking to a survivor (I was very lucky to be able to do so because of Sam’s dad and Brodie’s Mum) or a person who barley knows ANYTHING about cancer.
Before the exhibition, I definitely struggled when I was asked something about my learning, but through the process, I definitely learned to explain my learning which is definitely a life skill.
Overall, I definitely got a much deeper understanding of my inequity (which was cancer BTW)

I think I did a very good job and I have improved on toking to all kinds of ages. I rely like doing animation it was very fun and I think I now no way more about animation and how to do it.
I have improved on how to find the information and pouting it in my on words and how i went tork to father bob and how now I now you don’t gust look on the internet.

I’d like to see your animation. How can I access it?

Hi Ms. J,
Now, after the exhibition I have learnt how to express my thoughts and feelings about inequities and bullying through my creative expression drama. I have created an understanding of bullying and what bystanders can do to help the victim in bullying situations at school for: physical bullying, verbal bullying, intimidation, social alienation and indirect bullying. I have worked out other ways to research by not using the internet because I couldn’t find anything relevant for my inquiry on the internet. I worked out other ways to find out my information, by using different adults opinions and my opinion, because the answer I needed for my inquiry depends on the person. I have improved on speaking to others about my learning and explaining my thinking. I have learnt it is important to have understandings instead of just copying and pasting information.

You’re right, it is often better to speak to people and get the perspectives of people in your own community than to spend hours on the Internet.
September 19th, 2012 at 2:45 pm
After our exhibition these are all the thing i have learnt and realized…..
- I have relized how well I can explain an discuss my learning with people or in a reflection.
- I have learnt that you cxan express your thoughts and feeling through drama, art, music, poetry, photography and animation.
- I have learnt to do a good inquiry, you dont have to have many facts and info you can just speak and understand info instead of just writing things down.
- I have found many other ways for geting info not just the internet you can also talk to people and read books and go somewhere.
- During the exhibition process I learnt how much on person even a kid can change the world.
- Now I have a much deeper understanding of my inequity and understand everything about it.
- Now I know that when you start a conversation with someone it always ends up in a conversation and that both ends of the conversation finishes and they both know something new.
- In drama I learnt that you don’t need to show every part of the story you can skip and just do the important bits of the story it still gets the message across.
- In drama we learnt that you don’t need props to actually act that prop out you could actually be the object.
I really enjoyed the exhibition and I learnt so much, than you to all the teachers it was a great experience.

I love what you said about conversations. It reminds me of a quote by a guy called David Perkins:
“We are sensemakers, and our greatest tool is conversation”
September 19th, 2012 at 2:52 pm
Hi Ms J,
I can now look someone in the eye and tell them about my inequity and feel confident. I feel like that if I bring awareness as a child, it will make adults want to do something because they are adults and I am a child. I know now that a child can make a difference in their own small ways, but even the small ways make a big difference. I feel like I can now express my feelings through a picture and we all now a picture is worth 1000 words. I can now take a good photo and then fix it in Photoshop to make it even better without making it look to fake. I can now really be grateful of what I have and to love everything that I have. If I badly WANT something I can think again and realise that I actually do not NEED it. I feel like I can now understand and analyse the text and not just copy and paste. I feel like now I can now search efficiently by using the key words and then find really good websites. I feel like now after this I know so much and have come so far deepening my understanding of animal cruelty. I feel like now I know how this procedure works and that I can do it again easily.
I have loved the experience. I have learned so much and I know now so much.

Hi Ms J,
This exhibition has enhanced me as a learner by showing me; that firsthand information is very useful because you can get more information in smaller time and you can use your own experience to teach you and use this firsthand knowledge to develop your ideas and help you communicate with people that have a connection to your inquiry. Not all information is found on the internet. You can also find information by interviewing people that have a connection to your inquiry or going to places that are connected to your inquiry. I also learnt that one good visual, sound, smell or taste can lure people in to you with great questions. When your audience asks good questions that means you have done well and made them think. Another thing I learnt was art is a great way of expressing yourself, information, opinions, emotions and much more. I have learnt about street art (a very popular way to express ourselves through art) and to do graffiti letters very well!

Hi Ms J,
I loved doing the exhibition! It was so fun how we could all express our inequities in our own ways and how we had to talk about all of it. I really enjoyed having different people coming to me every time and asking me different questions every time and I could answer them in a full answer. I loved doing it in front of people all different ages. Everyone seemed to be so interested in my subject and they just wanted to ask me loads of questions. I loved it! I felt very confident and ready.

Hi Ms J,
The exhibition has gave me the chance to learn about something that I care about, and it has shown me they ways animals are tortured.
I have also learned to be more confident and comfortable talking to a crowd.
Every second of my exhibition experience was always engaging.
I had a lot of fun collaborating and expressing my thoughts and learning.
And this whole experience has gave me the chance to come out of my shell.
